What is Teens 4 Good?

Teens 4 Good is a youth-led food production and nutrition business that transforms vacant lots into urban farms that grow fresh vegetables, herbs, fruit, and flowers.  Through hands-on entrepreneurial and educational activities, youth learn practical skills about how to create, build and sustain a socially responsible business.

Youth learn how to: 1) plant, nurture, harvest, package, and distribute vegetables, herbs, fruit and flowers; 2)  sell produce and garden related products (i.e. cookbooks, calendars) to local communities, restaurants and stores; 3) design and conduct nutrition programs; 4) design  marketing materials (i.e. website, newsletters, brochures); 5) manage finances; 6) communicate effectively; 7) apply character strengths to solve problems; and 8) build healthy relationships through teamwork, networking, sales presentations, and customer service.

In addition, Teens 4 Good members participate in a comprehensive, experiential-based curriculum that builds communication, team building, problem-solving, critical analytical, and leadership skills among participating youth, skills that are needed to succeed in the 21st century.

Conceived by teens, the mission of Teens 4 Good is, “To make a difference in the world by inspiring all teens to give back to their communities. Teens were put in this world for a reason, and we are here to help them realize that they have the power and the responsibility to create a positive future.”

Since 2005, Teens 4 Good has launched ten urban farms and currently manages seven of them. Collectively, these farms produce and distribute more than 8,000 pounds of healthy food per year to people in need. Ultimately, the vision of Teens 4 Good is to serve as a national model and mobilize thousands of youth to take leadership roles in improving their communities by transforming vacant lots into urban farms, improving access to healthy food for all people, creating meaningful jobs for at-risk youth, and empowering youth to become healthy, responsible young adults and leaders who give back to the community.
