Volunteering

I would like to volunteer - not just once or twice, though.

I haven't yet finished college, but I would like the experience of working in the field of helping people on a day-to-day basis. I'd love to be able to do something where I actually interact with the people I'm helping. I figured that this month that I have off of school would be the perfect opportunity to have this experience. Since it's only a month I'll be away from school, I have every day open, and believe me, I'd be thrilled to be able to get out of the house and be useful to others as often as possible. While I won't be able to volunteer as often once I get back to school, it is definitely something I'd like to continue doing then as well.

So. What can I do to help?

RE: Settlement Houses

In the late 1800s and early 1900s, waves of immigrants were entering Philadelphia and other cities in the country. Immigrants were faced with many challenges as they acclimated to their new homes. They needed housing, jobs, health care, and ultimately safe and healthy neighborhoods where they could work, learn, worship, play and ultimately reach their dreams. Their call to action began the Settlement movement during which volunteers came together to create Settlement houses for immigrants. These Settlements provided shelter, food, and an array of supportive services for the immigrants.

The Greater Philadelphia Federation of Settlements was founded in 1906. For over 100 years, the Federation has serviced children, youth, adults and families by strengthening neighborhoods through collaborative efforts. They have helped thousands of families find homes, learn English, gain employment, enhance their children’s education, create safe and nurturing environments for their children, and build safe, healthy neighborhoods where families would flourish
