Parent EmPower Program

The Greater Philadelphia Federation of Settlements is once again sponsoring parenting classes for parents of children ages 0 to 10 and 10 to 22 years of age. The classes are adult learning style with group activities and time for everyone to take part and bond with other parents around child rearing issues. Certified facilitators with years of experience provide guidance to the learning experience.

On Thursday December 11, 2008 The Greater Philadelphia Federation of Settlements and United Way of South Eastern Pennsylvania was successful in hosting the 2008 Youth Development Conference at the Pennsylvania Convention Center, having well over 650 youth and adults in attendance.

Keynote speaker Kazi addressed the audience with inspiring and insightful words which in turn received a thunderous applause. 26 exhibitors ranging from local college and universities to other social service agencies, put on displays about the various opportunities and services that are available. In between all that, there were dynamic interactive circle learning sessions offered, where youth and adults could attend and learn from each other.

Mayor Michael Nutter stopped by around lunch time for a quick question / answer session and later on in the afternoon several other city officials hosted a panel discussion.

Activating Civic Engagement

The United Neighborhood Centers of America (UNCA) has launched an initiative to effectively engage organizations, their neighbors and community members in efforts to advance social changes that can improve their own lives and bolster chances of success for children, families and their communities. As a result, UNCA will host the 2008 National Policy Summit in Washington, DC scheduled for December 8 through 10, 2008. This will be a perfect opportunity for youth to use their voice and attempt to improve the lives of their families and neighborhoods they live in.
